Benzene Environmental Sensor

Research 7 Benzene Sensor-lowres

In collaboration with the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) of Saudi Aramco, we developed a highly sensitive laser-based benzene sensor for petrochemical installations. We used an ICL near a wavelength of 3.3 mm and achieved an unprecedented detection limit of 2 ppb of benzene. Our sensor showed superior performance compared to GC-MS in terms of sensitivity and time response. This work led to a couple of conference papers, a journal paper (Mhanna et al., IEE Sensors Journal, 2021) and a US patent filing (Mhanna et al., US Patent Application 2021). We recently employed deep neural networks to differentiate similarly-shaped spectra of BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene) molecules, and demonstrated selective measurements of these important aromatics (Mhanna et al., CLEO 2021).
