Methane Leak Detection Sensor
19 June, 2023
Professor Aamir Farooq and his team put their methane leak detection laser sensor to the test in a real-world setting at the KAUST New Energy Oasis. Colorless and highly flammable methane gas has the potential to be a serious risk to public safety, so a reliable and accurate detection system is essential. The project attracted collaborators from Aramco, including representatives from the Upstream Research Center, Upstream Business Support Department (UBSD), and KAUST EXPEC Advanced Research Center. The laser sensor is capable of finding leaks in a variety of places, such as power plants and methane production sites. It was able to detect a methane leak from a distance using an IR laser, and it is fast, calibration-free, and can be used remotely.
